Overview

NACE is the European standard classification of economic activities. It is derived from ISIC and adapted to European circumstances. NACE Rev.2.1 was adopted in 2023 and replaces NACE Rev.2 (2008).

NACE Rev.2.1 introduces new concepts like digital platforms, circular economy activities, and better coverage of services. The revision aligns NACE more closely with current ISIC revision directions.

Structure

4-level hierarchy: Sections (A–U), Divisions (2-digit, 88+), Groups (3-digit, 275+), Classes (4-digit, 650+). Follows the ISIC structure at Section and Division levels.

Four-digit numeric codes prefixed by a letter for the Section (e.g., C10.11 — Manufacture of distilled potable alcoholic beverages).

Relationship to JSIC

JSIC does not directly correspond to NACE. Both are derived from ISIC, so they share a common top-level structure. JSIC-to-NACE mapping tables are published by Soumu for EU–Japan statistical cooperation.

NACE Rev.2.1 includes new digital and environmental activity classes not present in JSIC. JSIC maintains unique categories for Japanese institutional structures (e.g., administrative/ancillary establishments in each major group).
