Maintained by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (厚生労働省).

Overview

The Japanese Statistical Classification of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death is the national adaptation of the World Health Organization's International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10). It is the standard for mortality and morbidity coding in Japan.

Relationship to ICD-10

The Japanese classification follows the ICD-10 structure and coding system with Japan-specific extensions and detailed rules. The ICD is maintained by the WHO and the Japanese adaptation is coordinated between the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) and the Statistics Bureau.

Structure

The ICD-10 structure uses alphanumeric codes (A00-Z99) in a 3-character core classification with optional 4-character subcategories. The Japanese adaptation adds national-level detail codes for specific conditions prevalent in Japan.

Administration

The classification is maintained by the Vital, Health and Social Statistics Division of the MHLW. It is governed by the Statistics Act (統計法) as a fundamental statistical classification. Revisions follow the WHO ICD revision cycle.
